1-Apr-2017 | Sound Alerts in Dashboard

Brian Dosal -

NOTE: This Feature is available in Standard, Advanced & Platinum Accounts.  Only available on NUMBER Gauges and Progress Gauges.

You can now turn on audio thresholds for gauges in dashboards!  You do so by going into the Gauge, Design, Colors & Thresholds and checking "Play Dashboard Alert" when you set up a threshold.  When the gauge syncs on a dashboard and meets the threshold, DING, you'll hear the sound.

This is a first iteration and looking forward to getting feedback from you all!  Enjoy!

Will this be available as a la carte upgrade to standard users?

Will we have the ability to add customized sounds in the near future?

Hi Chris, this isn't available a la carte for standard accounts.

JC, send us the sound you want and we'll see if we can add it in... no plans yet for customized sounds.

Wow... An up-charge for such a basic missing (and essential) feature. There aren't any contracts with Brightgauge, right? We can cancel anytime?

Hi Thomas, there are no contracts with BrightGauge. You can cancel anytime. It was definitely a tough debate internally to put this in the Advanced Package and one we're still having.

I'm really disappointed in BrightGauge. This is a money grab, plain and simple. People have been asking for this feature for quite some time. You guys finally release it, and low and behold, you have to upgrade to get it.

I've recommended and defended BrightGauge in the past, because I know you guys have an MSP background, and I think that helps you guys to understand the situations we're in and the constraints under which we operate. I've told anyone that will listen that you guys are different than IT Glue, ConnectWise, and the rest of the gang who upcharge for EVERYTHING. Any new features have a price tag associated with them. That wasn't the case with BrightGauge.

    Until now.

    Understood Thomas, thank you.

Again, a tough debate we're still having internally about whether this feature belongs in standard plan or advanced plan. Only 4 features are in advanced package that are not in Standard. This is one of those 4 at this moment.

I always like to do a reality check on myself. I just pinged 5 of my IT buddies who all use BrightGauge.

Every one said that this feature should be included and most definitely isn't worth another $100/month.

Three felt strongly enough about it, like me, that they'd cancel their service in protest.

Please describe the logic on this. Does the alert sound just once per gauge, or will it sound each time the gauge is incremented or decremented?
Will the alert go off each time the gauge is loaded, or only once?
To use an example for the server down gauge:
    1. Current status of the gauge is 0, no servers offline.
    2. Server goes offline. Server offline=1. Will the alert sound?
    3. Another server goes offline. Server offline=2. Will the alert sound again?
    4. Dashboard reloads due to our rotation mechanism. Will the gauge sound again?
    5. One server recovers, servers offline=1. Will the gauge sound on the decrement?
    6. Final server recovers, servers offline=0. Will the gauge sound on the decrement?

    Hi Thomas,
Great questions. The answer is simply that if the gauge syncs when you're on the dashboard and the threshold is met, you'll hear the sound. The key here is that the sound will go off after the sync is complete and threshold is met. I'll double confirm #4 as I'm pretty sure it will sound if the gauge finished syncing while on the same dashboard.

Assuming your threshold is > 0 then it will sound at #2, #3, #5.

It seems that it would be useful to have the option to play a sound only when the number changes from the previous value after a dataset refresh.

For example - if we wanted to play an alert sound when a server goes offline, we don't want to be alerted every two minutes that the same server is still offline.

Is it possible to add the option to only alert on an increase/decrease in the number?

Feature request - We would like an alert that will sound off at regular intervals until the alert is acknowledged. In the case of offline servers, a single ding like the default sound can easily get missed.

Greg and Kevin's requests are opposite of one another. I think the next iteration of this feature should include some behavior options: Alert once, alert X times, alert until count drops below threshhold. And perhaps an alert time - alert every 5 minutes.
And of course, configurable sounds. The "ding" is too innocuous. You need to use a Star Trek red alert klaxon (from the original series, the Next Generation one is not annoying enough):

Thomas - We won't really be happy until we have the Wilhelm scream as our audio alert.

    Hi everyone,

As of last Friday, we have turned on Sound Alerts for Standard plans as well! It was a lengthy discussion but we're happy where we landed on this fun feature.

    Cheers,
    Brian

    Hello,
I was disappointed to learn today that the sound plays every time the dashboard refreshes. If we have a metric that is met the sound continues to play every time the dashboard refreshes. We may have a certain metric met that is present for the entire day (due to various reasons). We do not need a sound going off every time the dashboard refreshes all day long. We need a way to acknowledge the audible alert when it goes off so it does not continue to go off throughout the day while still allowing sounds to be played when new alerts come in.

I have submitted a feature request today for sound alert customization after support informed me this is not possible. Please take a moment and vote for this topic as well - https://support.brightgauge.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115009407346-Sound-Alert-acknowledgement-and-or-customization
