Keep Customizations when Migrating ConnectWise PSA On-premises to PSA Cloud via CDA

OverviewEdit section

This article explains how you can migrate your ConnectWise BrightGauge™ instance from ConnectWise PSA™ On-premises to PSA Cloud (via Cloud Data Access) while still retaining your customizations in BrightGauge. To get started, make sure you have the following prerequisites.

Prerequisites

    1. You must have ConnectWise PSA Cloud Premium, which comes with Cloud Data Access (CDA).

Note: To purchase Cloud Data Access, please get in touch with your Account Manager.

    2. The existing ConnectWise PSA On-premises data source in BrightGauge must be available and should not be deleted, as the custom gauges and datasets are tied to your existing PSA On-premises data source.
    3. You must have a server to host the BrightGauge agent. This agent is used to communicate with the ConnectWise PSA Cloud CDA. If you plan to decommission your existing PSA On-premises server, you must stand up another server that can be used to communicate with your PSA Cloud CDA. For server requirements, see the Installing the BrightGauge Agent.
    4. The individual who signed the quote for CDA (or ConnectWise PSA Premium) should receive two separate emails that provide you with the details below (please check your all folders including Spam).

Note: If you do not receive these two emails within a week, please reach out to your Account Manager.

Note: If your ConnectWise PSA server is changed, you must use the credentials that are provided for the new server.

      • Database internal IP/Hostname
      • Database name
      • Database Internal Port
      • Password

Warning: Do not delete your existing ConnectWise PSA data source for any reason. All of your custom dashboards, gauges, and datasets are tied to that data source.

  • If that data source is deleted, all of your gauges, dashboards, reports, and data are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
  • You must retain a server to host the BrightGauge agent. The agent server communicates to the ConnectWise PSA Cloud CDA. Without this agent, all of your datasets fail to resync with PSA Cloud.

Migrate from On-premises PSA to PSA Cloud via CDA

Follow the steps below:

  1. Log into BrightGauge and navigate to your configured PSA On-premises data source.
  2. Update the existing database details with the CDA replica as shown in the image below. For example, if mydatabase.psacloud.com is the CDA replica endpoint running on Port 5155 with the database name "mytestdb" along with "mytestbduser" as the username and password respectively, then the fields show as the following:

  3. If you do not currently have the BrightGauge agent, please refer to the following Installing the BrightGauge Agent documentation for more information.
  4. Once you have installed the agent, select Agent host from the drop-down once the agent is installed.
  5. Test the connection. If the details you provided are correct and the connection test is successful, the following message appears: "Test succeeded - your settings are correct".

Note: If you have enabled deep linking, you must go to the data source to update the Your Connectwise URL field with one of the following, based on your region/locale:

  6. Save the data source.
  7. Once the data source is saved, the dataset sync runs and syncs the data from the CDA replica database.
  8. The data on Gauges and Dashboards is updated after the sync is complete.
